One of the most beautiful and joyful Serbian customs, which has not been eradicated, even in cities, is dyeing eggs for Easter. According to established tradition, a diligent housewife dyes Easter eggs on Good Friday, a day when, by the way, nothing else is done. The first colored egg is set aside until next Easter and is called “guardhouse“.

When the day of the Resurrection of Christ dawns, from all the towers of the Orthodox churches, all the bells ring for a long time, announcing the arrival of the great holiday. The host goes with his flock to the church for the holy Easter service. After the service, the people greet each other with the words: “Christ is Risen!” and “Really Easter!” That greeting lasts until Easter.

When you come home from church, all the family members greet each other with Easter greetings and kiss. The host then lights a candle, takes a censer and incense, incenses all the members of the household who are standing at the prayer, hands the censer to someone younger and he incenses the whole house. If one does not know how to sing the Easter troparion, the “Our Father” and other prayers that are known by heart are read aloud, or they are read from the prayer book.

On the table is a decorated bowl with painted eggs. The host takes one egg first, followed by all the housemates. Then there is joy and a competition of whose egg is the strongest. It is a great joy for children.
